No staff and sheer harassment greeted people wanting to get their Aadhaar card made at the enrolment centre of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) at the Sampark Centre in Sector 15 on Friday morning.
The work is being carried out by a private firm as outsourcing agency for the UIDAI, and its staffer was apparently on leave.
At least 50 people had a heated exchange with the Sampark Centre staff, who told them to “come tomorrow”as the work was not their responsibility as such. This comes close on the heels of complaints that barely 40-50 applications are accepted by the staff anyway, and even those with online appointment through the UIDAI website are turned away.
Rekha Chauhan, a resident of Sector 45, said, “We were earlier told at the Sector-43 centre that they did not have the capacity to take all walk-in applications. Then my daughter went to their website and got us an appointment for Sector 15, scheduled for 10-11am. We are here since 9am, only to find that the staffer is on leave, as she is sick, we are told.”
Ajay Gupta, general manager of the firm Karvy Data Management Service Private Limited, said, “In this express case, we will certainly take action if the leave has not been taken a day in advance. But we are indeed impeded if someone calls in sick at the last moment. In future we will ensure we have the backup staff at the centre.”
About the limited number of people being entertained by the centres, he said, “The procedure of Aadhaar registration is long, including capturing biometric details. So we take in only as many applications as we can process. It is not advisable if we keep people waiting the entire day and then turn them away.”
