A day after Janata Dal (United) broke its 17-year-old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday blamed the BJP for the end of 17-year-old alliance. While defending JD (U)s decision to end the alliance, Nitish said that the Atal-Advani era in the BJP is over and they cannot reconcile with the new leadership.

<P> Eight new leaders were introduced in the Council of Ministers on Monday, while Sis Ram Ola and Oscar Fernandes made a re-entry after a gap of four years. A New Delhi court sent cricketer Ajit Chandila, accused of spot fixing in the Indian Premier League , to police custody for three days today. The Delhi Police told court that Chandila was required to corroborate evidence collected from other accused in the Indian Premier League scam. The court directed the police to produce Chandila on June 20. The court also postponed hearing on bail application of other five accused to June 22.

Taking potshots at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after he accused the saffron brigade of betraying and cornering its senior elders in an oblique reference to the sidelining of Lal Krishna Advani, senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu today said every party should take care of its own outfit and not poke its nose into other parties. Naidu said Advani is BJPs tallest leader and has the moral authority. The Bihar Chief Minister earlier in the day rejected the BJPs charge of betrayal, and accused the saffron outfit of betraying and ignoring its own senior leaders.

About 52 people who were stranded in a heavily flooded area in Haryana were rescued by a joint operation run by the army and the National Disaster Relief Management (NDRF) teams. The people were trapped within a tract of land at Lapra village in the state’s Yamunanagar district after the surrounding area was heavily flooded by the water of the Yamuna River. Continuous monsoon rains in the region have heavily flooded many areas and have created troublesome situation for the local people as they struggled to save their lives and properties.

Veteran party leader, LK Advani is apparently worried about the political fallout of the split of the 17 year long alliance between the BJP and the JD (U). Atleast 10 people are feared dead in Uttarakhand after incessant rains lashed the hilly region, causing landslide. Landslides were reported from over 12 places on the Dehradun-Yamnotri, the Rishikesh-Gangotri, the Rishikesh-Badrinath and the Rishikesh-Kedarnath National Highway. Thousands of pilgrims headed for the Himalayan shrines of Gangotri and Yamunotri, in the state were also stranded as the routes were closed due to landslips at various points including Piapalmandi, Baraki and Nalupani.

<P>Reacting to the split of BJP and JD(U) earlier in the day, BJP President Rajnath Singh said that break-up of NDA is sad and unfortunate. Calling the BJP-JD (U) alliance as an emotional one, Singh asked whether appointing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the electoral head of the party for the upcoming elections is his fault. The BJP President also defended Modi saying that such riots as in 2002 have taken place during the Congress regime too but the ruling party is never referred to as communal. Singh further said that this split happened at a time when the sole purpose of all the non-Congress party should have been to remove Congress from the power. </P>

<P>Bihar chief Minister Nitish Kumar today met Governor DY Patil and informed him that his party was no longer in alliance with the BJP. Kumar has also sought a fresh vote of confidence in the House to prove his majority in the legislature to be conducted on June 19. The Bihar chief minister needs 122 to prove majority in the house. Kumar reportedly has the support of 118 MLAs and five independents. Earlier in the day, the JD (U) finalised a resolution that will explain its reasons for ending the alliance.</P>
