A day after Janata Dal (United) broke its 17-year-old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday blamed the BJP for the end of 17-year-old alliance. While defending JD (U)s decision to end the alliance, Nitish said that the Atal-Advani era in the BJP is over and they cannot reconcile with the new leadership.

A New Delhi court sent cricketer Ajit Chandila, accused of spot fixing in the Indian Premier League , to police custody for three days today. The Delhi Police told court that Chandila was required to corroborate evidence collected from other accused in the Indian Premier League scam. About 52 people who were stranded in a heavily flooded area in Haryana were rescued by a joint operation run by the army and the National Disaster Relief Management (NDRF) teams. Calling the BJP-JD (U) alliance as an emotional one, Singh asked whether appointing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the electoral head of the party for the upcoming elections is his fault. The BJP President also defended Modi saying that such riots as in 2002 have taken place during the Congress regime too but the ruling party is never referred to as communal. <P>Bihar chief Minister Nitish Kumar today met Governor DY Patil and informed him that his party was no longer in alliance with the BJP. Kumar has also sought a fresh vote of confidence in the House to prove his majority in the legislature to be conducted on June 19. The Bihar chief minister needs 122 to prove majority in the house. Kumar reportedly has the support of 118 MLAs and five independents. Earlier in the day, the JD (U) finalised a resolution that will explain its reasons for ending the alliance.</P>
