2017 MV Agusta Brutale 800 review: An exhilarating new avatar of the street naked

Italy’s stunning street naked is back in a new avatar for 2017, and it sounds promising. What’s it like from the saddle?

MV Agusta, the exotic Italian bikemaker, has what is perhaps one of the most gorgeous street nakeds in the world in the form of the Brutale 800. For 2017, the bike’s gone under the knife, and is all set to hit Indian showrooms sometime around July. I headed to Varese, Italy, to find out what’s new about it.

The styling changes are subtle and the Brutale 800 looks smoother overall. Its trapezoidal tank has been redesigned, and also new is an LED headlight with a newly designed cowl, revised fenders, and a new tail section. It now gets a double saddle, concealed passenger grab rails, a new handlebar and the addition a hydraulic clutch. The instrument panel has also been updated, along with the switchgear and handlebar buttons.

The signature three-pipe exhaust has been redesigned, and is slightly larger now, which produces a minutely stronger exhaust note from the 798cc, inline-three cylinder engine. Power, however, is down from 123hp on the older model to 109hp now; although it wasn’t exactly noticeable during the test. There is however a bump in torque to 83Nm, with most of it kicking in from as low as 3,800rpm.

This updated Brutale 800 also gets a new electronics package. This includes four power modes – Rain, Normal, Sport and Custom, and an eight-level traction control system with switchable and adjustable ABS. The old bike felt quite raw, but thanks to the new tech suite, this new one is a lot more refined. However, the throttle is still a little glitchy at low revs resulting in power delivery that’s a bit abrupt for city conditions when you roll on and off the throttle.

So while the new bike is more manageable than the older model, it retains its aggressive nature. Wring the throttle and the front wheel will head skywards in first and second gear. In keeping with its sporty intent, it gets a quick shifter for gear shifts, which is also switchable and works brilliantly. It keeps your clutch hand free, although the clutch lever itself isn’t too heavy.

This is a bike that truly feels in its element when you’re pushing it hard. The handling is tight, and the bike feels nimble and quick on its toes. It does however feel a little vague to be completely confidence inspiring; so complete familiarity with the motorcycle may take longer hours in the saddle. The new Brutale 800 will be shod with the new Pirelli Diablo Rosso 3 tyres that provided good levels of grip. Complimenting that was the stopping power from the radially mounted, twin 320mm floating Brembo brakes at the front and 220mm one at the rear. And although the bike’s setup on the 43mm upside-down front forks and monoshock at the rear felt apt for the Italian road conditions, expect the stiff setup to result in a harsher ride over our less-than-perfect Indian roads.

Overall, the new Brutale 800 carries forth the legacy of MV Agusta and stays true to its status as an Italian exotic. Typical of the bike maker’s offerings, it’s a stunning looking machine, it’s a whole lot of fun to ride, and very involving at the same time. Some folks will really appreciate its slightly temperamental nature.

Now, thanks to its exotic status and MV Agusta’s stand on being a purely super premium brand, pricing will be on the lofty side at Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune). That, however, doesn’t take away from the fact that it is a beautiful motorcycle that’s exhilarating to ride.
