The budget luxury electric car Tesla Model 3 has received almost 400,000 orders, the Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Thursday.
“We are now almost at 400,000 orders for the model 3,” Elon Musk told a conference held in the Norwegian capital. He added that the interest in the model had “surprised even us”.
On April 7, the company said it had received over 325,000 reservations for the model 3.
The car will go into production in 2017 at a starting price of $35,000. The Model 3 will enter a crowded field of luxury and electric cars that includes gasoline-fuelled models such as the Audi A4 and BMW 3-Series, and electric models such as the forthcoming Chevrolet Bolt EV from General Motors Co.
