Having seen considerable success in the super luxury sports car niche, Audi is aiming for complete domination, spurred on by the fact that the R8 sold more units in a month than the 911 did in a year. Now launched in India at a relatively inexpensive Rs 76 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), Audi is aiming to rule the roost with its 444bhp beast, the RS5.
The big V8 plonked into this car is a modified version of the R8’s motor with more power, so you have an inkling of what this big Audi coupe is capable of. It rockets to 100 kph in 4.6 seconds on its way to a top speed (if you can find the road) of 250 kph. Despite all this, it’s the way the motor puts down all this power that really blows you away. The car is unbelievably adept at crawling in traffic. Versatility seems to be a very useful trick up the RS5’s sleeve.
Nail the throttle pedal on a deserted road and the gentle warble at low revs turns into a deep- throated V8 growl. The horizon is reeled in through the big windscreen at an alarming rate and the flow of power is unrelenting. The kick in your kidneys is the same at whatever speed you floor it and there is always a surplus of power. Move the gear lever across to manual mode and you can control the shifts via steering-mounted paddle-shifters.
Sounds good too
There’s a delightful ‘phut’ sound every time you upshift, and the throttle blips automatically when you shift to a lower gear. Such aural accompaniments simply heighten the driving experience. But what owners can enjoy is the wide range of drivetrain and chassis settings.
Audi high performance RS5 may not be as involving to drive as the BMW M3 — its natural rival which offers a more pure driving experience — but what Indian owners would prefer is that it demands less from the one behind the wheel. Any performance car in India has to have a practical side. That’s exactly what the RS5 offers, and is Audi’s trump card.
