Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo on Friday launched its compact entry level crossover vehicle V40 Cross Country at Rs. 28.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The car will compete with the likes of BMW X1, Audi Q3 and the two Mercedes small cars A and B Class.

A relative laggard in the Indian luxury car space, Volvo,  expects the V40 will help reduce the gap with its German rivals.

“It will bring in new impetus to our growth strategy in India. So far we have bookings of about 70 units and our target is to sell about 120 units this year,”  said Tomas Ernberg, managing director, Volvo India. “Last year, we sold about 800 units and the target for this year is around 1100 to 1200 units.”

It will also launch fresh models of its existing sedan S60 and SUV XC60 in October.

A crossover version of its global compact car, the V40 cross country is powered by a 2 litre, 5 cylinder diesel engine that develops 150 bhp power and 350 Nm torque.

Volvo claims it has a mileage of over 16 kmpl. Known for its safety credentials, the vehicle has received the top rating of 5 stars in the Euro NCAP collision test.
