German luxury car manufacturer BMW on Monday said it has emerged as the top luxury carmaker in India with a jump of 33.78 per cent at 3,619 units in 2009.

BMW India had sold 2,705 units in 2008, the company said in a statement.

"With 3,619 cars delivered to customers in 2009, BMW India has achieved the highest sales by a manufacturer in the luxury car segment in a year till date," it added.

The company further said it has increased its market share in the luxury segment to over 40 per cent last year from about 9 per cent in 2006.

"We made great strides in implementing our strategy, and this gave us a significant competitive edge that provided us with a clearly formulated vision," BMW India President Peter Kronschnabl said.

The company has an assembly facility at Chennai having an annual production capacity of 3,000 units. It rolls out 3 and 5-Series sedans in petrol and diesel variants from the plant.
