Mercedes Benz will launch five compact models in India which will help the company regain top position in luxury car segment, said Dieter Zetsche, chairman of Daimler AG.
Mercedes Benz, the luxury car brand of $139 billion Daimler, lost out its number 1 position to BMW sometime ago and slipped to third position when Audi overtook it in the first quarter.
“Our compact segment will have five members. A Class, B Class, the concept car we are launching next week in China, a sports SUV and another model we haven’t specified yet,” Zetsche told Hindustan Times.
He did not specify the timeframe. However, it is expected that these cars will be launched in Indian market in the space of next two years.
Zetsche was in Chennai for the commissioning of the truck plant Daimler India Commercial Vehicle (DICV). With a total investment of Rs 4,400 crore, DICV has put up a plant with an annual capacity of 36,000 units and a research centre in Oragadam near Chennai.
DICV will launch 17 trucks under Bharat Benz brand.
