US auto major Ford Motor will continue with its India roadmap despite the US fortunes of the world’s third largest car company taking a severe beating in the recent times.
The roadmap of Ford Motor India Ltd includes an investment of $ 500 million, an all-new small car based on the Verve and an engine factory capable of manufacturing engines of up to 1.4-litre capacity. The Verve is currently at a concept stage and will be available as a hatchback and sedan.
“We have a strong plan for India, and we intend to go forward with it,” said Nigel E Warke, executive director, marketing, sales and service, Ford India. Ford has 135 dealers in the country and is out to increase the numbers.
The new small car would have an engine manufactured in India, and in keeping with Ford’s global practice, could be used in catering to export markets.
The company is currently expanding the plant where the Fiesta engine is made, said Warke, who was in Mumbai to announce a new brand ambassador for the Ford Endeavour.
“India has a major role to play in the car company’s revival plans,” Warke said. This would include rationalisation in costs and materials, he added.
