Buoyed by the success of its maiden small car Figo in the domestic market, Ford India on Wednesday said it plans to make India the hub for small cars and would expand the export market for the Figo to Mexico and other nations in north Africa, the Caribbean and middle east. Figo is currently being made only in India.

"We do plan to make India our small car hub and the country would be the sole producer of Figo in the world," said Michael Boneham, president and managing director, Ford India. "There is no plan to assemble the car anywhere else. We may replicate the same model for some of our future launches, but it will depend on how much demand there is for that car in overseas markets."

The first shipment of 1,500 units to Mexico would be sea-borne in two weeks - the first time a car made in India is being exported to the north American country, but Boneham denied any plans to export to the US.

"US is a different market and small cars are not as popular there as it is here," Boneham said. At present, Figo is exported to South Africa and Nepal.
