US-based auto major General Motors (GM) said on Friday its upcoming small car for India will be priced in the region of Rs 4 lakh, helped by a 100 per cent localisation of components that the company is targeting.

However, the price tag makes the car one notch above its existing small car Spark, belying earlier reports of it being the cheapest car in the company's stables for India.

“Concerns arising from the talks of bankruptcy of the US-based parent company hampered our sales up to July,” said Karl Slym, managing director, GM India. “Now those concerns are over and we hope sales to pick up from here. Already our offer of three-year free maintenance (scheme) has had a decisive impact on sales and with the launch of our small car and Cruze sedan by the end of this year we are hopeful of better days ahead.”

GM India has been working hard on increasing the local content of its models, a sureshot way to price the cars aggresively.

“Cruze will change the face of GM in India. So far our cars are 50 to 99 per cent indigenised. The cruise will be the first car from the GM stable to be fully built in India,” Slym said.
