Honda recalls 11,500 bikes over brake fault

Japanese auto major Honda's wholly-owned subsidiary, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), on Monday said it would recall 11,500 units of the standard variant of its premium motorcycle CBR 250R, which were produced and sold in India between March 2011 and September 2012, to fix a defective brake system.
Honda said the voluntary move was the first of its kind by any two-wheeler manufacturer in India and the company would take less than an hour to rectify the problem in its bikes.
"There is a possibility of limited ineffectiveness in front brake application, though this concern doesn't impact the overall braking functionality and effectiveness of front and rear brakes under normal riding conditions," HMSI said in a statement.

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, Honda sold 3,338 units of CBR 250R bikes in the April-October period this year against 13,434 units during the same period last year.
Honda, after parting ways with its Indian partner Hero last year, is throwing its full weight behind its subsidiary HMSI. With its array of scooters and bikes, Honda edged past Bajaj Auto in domestic two-wheeler sales this year, clocking sales of 1.52 million units in the April-October period to claim the second position after Hero MotoCorp, which leads the pack with 3.4 million units. Bajaj is now in the third position, selling 1.48 million units.
While Honda registered a 47% growth this financial year, its competitors saw a decline in sales. But Honda's premium bike in the 250 cc category, CBR 250R, skidded in the market.
The 200-250 cc category saw a 22% year-on-year decrease so far this year as market volumes fell from 88,920 units to 69,172 units. Bajaj with its Pulsar, Avenger and Kawasaki Ninja portfolio dominates the segment selling 41,954 units in the April-October period, while Hero MotoCorp has sold 23,880 units of its Karizma.
