Alto still on top, sales dip for second year

For the ninth consecutive year, Maruti Alto was the largest selling car in India in 2013; but for the second straight year, its sales declined as a sluggish economy took its toll on the car’s fortunes.

Alto suffered a 7.3% dip in sales during the year, which followed a 7.8% decline in 2012. For the second year, Alto sales have not been able to cross the 300,000 unit mark, clearly indicating that the new Alto 800, which was launched in mid-2012 has not met market expectations.

The top 5 in the pecking order remained unchanged from 2012, with the small car Swift, its sedan version Dzire, Wagon R and Mahindra Bolero in that order. In a sluggish industry, the Dzire grew the highest with a 28.5% growth even as it witnessed increased competition with the entry of Honda Amaze and Ford EcoSport.

There are widespread changes outside the top 5, though. The Hyundai i10 suffered late in the year as the company’s own Grand i10 ate into its sales. The car’s sales declined by 21% during the year. No Hyundai model managed to grow its sales during the year, even though the Verna retained its position as the largest selling mid-size sedan.

For the first time ever, no Tata car figured in the top 10 list, with both the Indica and Nano suffering steep declines at 37% and 76% respectively. The world’s cheapest car is not even in top 25 cars in India now and is in desperate need of the make-over that Tata Motors has been hinting at for some time now.
