Almost 18 months after the first Nano hit India’s roads, Tata Motors on Monday opened the doors for unrestricted sale of the car across the country. So far, it was available freely only in 12 states as the firm grappled with capacity constraints following the relocation of its assembly plant from Singur in West Bengal to Sanand in Gujrat in 2008.

“Customers who are desirous of driving home a Nano, but had not booked the car in 2009, will now be able to purchase a Nano from the company’s 874 sales outlets in India,” Tata Motors said in a statement.

The announcement coincided with sales of the car taking off from a mere 509 in November to 5,784 units in December last year. Though this still lags the 9,000 units that were sold in July 2010, the company hopes sales will now go up.

Last month Tata Motors had launched a special 48-hour loan scheme for Nano buyers.
