Korean auto major Hyundai Motor India Ltd, on Wednesday started export of its new hatchback i20 which was unveiled recently at the Paris Motor Show in October. The first batch of export shipment to the European market numbering 2,820 units was flagged off from the Chennai port.
Europe accounts for almost 50 per cent of the company's total exports and the first i20s will be shipped to United Kingdom, Germany, Greece, Austria, Croatia, Spain, Belgium, Holland and Hungary.
For the current year, Hyundai has set an ambitious export target of 110 countries increasing its reach to Asia Pacific , Latin America , Africa, Middle East and Europe while consolidating its foothold in the current markets. The i20 will be subsequently be launched in the domestic market by the end of this year.
"In line with Hyundai India's positioning as the global export hub for compact cars, we recently started the third shift of operations to meet the anticipated demand," said H S Lheem, MD, HMIL.
