Looking to shake Honda City's stranglehold in the mid-size sedan segment, passenger car market leader Maruti Suzuki on Tuesday launched the diesel version of its sedan SX4 priced at Rs 7.74 lakh and Rs 8.62 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
The launch comes barely a fortnight after Maruti's most expensive offering, Kizashi, that directly targets Honda's Accord. The City is the only car in its segment without a diesel option, but it has kept competition at bay comfortably.
"In this segment, diesel variants account for 65-70% sales in cars that have both fuel options," said Mayank Pareek, managing executive officer (sales & marketing), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.
"We expect a repeat of the success of our other diesel offerings."
Refurbished versions of Hyundai Verna and Ford Fiesta due later this year would further increase competition for the City. Honda remained unperturbed, though.
"A new model creates excitement in the market," said Jnaneswar Sen, vice president marketing, Honda Siel Cars India.
"But we are confident customers will continue to appreciate the value offered by Honda City."
