Maruti Suzuki India Limited left no stone unturned to ensure there were no hiccups on the first day of resumed production at its Manesar plant.

As many as 1,500 policemen and hundreds of security guards were present on Tuesday to keep the situation under check.

The plant had witnessed labour unrest on July 18 when a dispute over the suspension of a worker led to arson, resulting in the death of the company general manager. More than 100 employees were injured.

More than a month later, work has finally resumed smoothly.

Though 150 cars were supposed to be rolled out on Tuesday, the company did not give any update on the production. An official said the immediate priority was not production, but rather emotionally stabilising the workers.

For now, the plant has only opened partially, with 300 workers joining work. Employees carried their uniforms in bags and wore them only once they were inside. This was to make sure they were not singled out and attacked by former workers who have been sacked or those arrested for the July 18 violence.

A few workers from Japan said the arrangements made them feel safe.

Several youths flocked the factory in the hope of getting a job. As the day ended, workers were bundled into cabs and buses as security guards kept watch.
