Tata Nano, Tata Motors’ flagship small car and the cheapest car in the world, will need to be tweaked for emission norms before it hits the US market.

But by the time it is ready to meet US emissions and safety standards, it won’t be cheap anymore.

Tata officials declined to put a figure to the price at which the Nano would retail in the US, but said it would cost more than its Rs 1 lakh price tag on Indian roads.

However, even at $8,000 (Rs 3.64 lakh), the Nano would cost much less than the $9,970 (approximately Rs 4.53 lakh) Hyundai Accent, which is the cheapest car in America at present.
