Nissan will launch sub-Rs 4 lakh cars in India under its Datsun brand, taking on entry level products such as Maruti's Alto and Wagon R, Hyundai's Santro and Eon, besides Tata's Nano and Indica. The first two products will be launched in early 2014 and the product portfolio will be enhanced later.

Nissan has expanded its manufacturing capacity in its Chennai plant from 200,000 units per annum to 400,000 units in order to address future demand of small cars of Datsun brand.

"By 2014, cars below Rs 4 lakh will account for 50% of the Indian market," said Ashwani Gupta, programme director, Datsun Business Unit, Nissan Motor Corporation. "These cars will be completely local; they will be engineered and manufactured locally."

Announcing the small car brand for India, Indonesia and Russia, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said in Japan that Datsun will bring in products which are affordable, fuel efficient and well adapted to the specific requirement of each market.

Datsun will offer entry level products "addressing consumers who today are buying used cars or driving motorcycles, because they can't afford a car," said Ghosn.
