It takes two to tango.

Mahindra & Mahindra, the automaker run by Anand Mahindra is looking at combining the expertise of Mahindra Electric, with that of Italian automobile design firm Pininfarina, to bring out a Tesla competitor, according to a leading financial daily.

While in interviews with HT, Pawan Goenka, managing director of M&M had earlier said that the company is assessing to make an indigenous product under the Pininfarina brand, the report on Thursday suggested that it will be an electric sports car.

A study of three to six months has been initiated to fulfil the automaker’s “dream” to build a high-end product, according to an Economic Times report.

The carmaker in 2009 took control of the Bengaluru-based Reva Electric Car and acquired the Italian design firm Pininfarina in 2015.

Pininfarina has been widely acclaimed for making designs for well known global cars, including the Ferrari.

Goenka has earlier told HT that what will be most critical for the product will be its viability. He has said at the end of 2016, “you will see when the product comes out...”, to a bunch of reporter in Delhi.

However, he did specify that it will be a luxury car, very different from what ever is available in the market.

M&M has identified three pillars of growth -- connected and self-drive cars, and electric cars being the third. The Pininfarina electric sports car sits into Mahindra’s first and third bucket of future mobility.

The company has been betting big on the electric and hybrid car technology in India since long. After it acquired the Reva from Chetan Maini, and introduced the e20 mini electric car. Since them it has launched many versions of Reva. M&M has also launched eVerito sedan, June 2016.

Pravin Shah, president and chief executive, automotive division at M&M had also told last year that the company has completed its portfolio of small electric cars, and is looking at one electric variant across its portfolio -- be it the Scorpio or the XUV 500.

The SUV maker had also displayed the Reva Halo concept at the Delhi Auto Expo 2014, and the e20 Sports in 2016.
