Options for a diesel saloon

autos Updated: Mar 27, 2011 00:44 IST

Q I am in the market for a diesel saloon. I have shortlisted the Fiat Linea and the Ford Fiesta. I like the Linea’s looks. What is your opinion about its reliability — will it last for five years? What about maintenance costs? Most of my driving will be on highways.

Balaji Vijayalayan

A Between the Linea and Fiesta, we prefer the Linea and agree that it’s a great looking car. However, the chic styling is not the only reason to buy the Linea. It’s a very solid car and will certainly last for more than five years. The Linea’s brilliant ride and handling makes it a great highway car as it gives you a lot of confidence at high speeds. Maintenance and aftersales are not one of Fiat’s strong points and hence don’t expect the same peace of mind you would get if you bought a Maruti. However, the Linea is still a terrific car and worth going in for.

Q I want to put nice and stylish alloy wheels on my Honda City i-VTEC. What tyre should I upgrade to, to replace my existing set?

Vikramjit Gill

A The original size on the City i-VTEC is the 175/65-R15. You can fit 195/60-R15s as an upsize for better roadholding with the

alloy wheels.

Q I would like to purchase a bike in the 150cc category, which needs to be stylish, comfortable and should give a decent mileage. Can you point me towards the right motorcycle?

A We suggest you consider the Yamaha FZ series of bikes, either an FZ-16, or FZ-S, both of which are India’s best overall 150cc motorcycles. Both offer good style and ride quality and are good to look at too.

Q I’m planning to buy a bike. Please suggest me that which is the best bike in the 220cc segment suitable for the Indian roads?

A The Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-i is the best 220cc motorcycle presently sold in India. You could however consider waiting for the Honda CBR250R, a superior, albeit more expensive, motorcycle that is set to debut across India in April 2011.
