I want to buy my first car, a petrol-engined hatchback within a Rs 4.5-5.25 lakh budget. It should have good performance, good interiors, and boot space. What do you recommend?

The recently launched Nissan Micra seems perfect. You’ll enjoy the roomy cabin, the peppy engine and the long features list. Keyless start-stop, too, is a useful gimmick.
I want to buy a new petrol-engined saloon in the Rs 8-9 lakh price range. It will be my second car and should have good road presence. It will be used once in a while.
If style and road presence are your priorities, we feel the Fiat Linea with its stunning design and Maserati-like nose will turn the most heads. The 1.4 petrol suits your budget and is also quite nice to drive.
I want to buy a Mahindra Logan. When does Mahindra plan to launch the four-metre version of the car? I want to buy the facelifted version.
Mahindra is planning a Logan that is less than four metres long by chopping the boot. The car will also get fresher interiors and a new grille. There is no official word on the launch date for the shortened Logan but you can expect it to come before the end of this year.
Between the Fiat Punto 1.2 Emotion (petrol) and the Volkswagen Polo Trendline petrol, which one would you recommend? My average mileage is 300 km a month. My priorities are good mileage, performance and solid build.
Both the Grande Punto and the VW Polo are good choices. However, we feel the Polo has an edge thanks to performance and fuel efficiency. The Punto feels more solid than the lighter Polo but the VW has better overall quality.
My Fiat Palio 1.2 ELX is over five years old. Despite a couple of overhauls, the engine isn’t performing well. I love the car and would like to keep it. A friend suggested fitting a brand-new engine. Is this possible? How much does it cost?
The full engine assembly for the Palio 1.2 ELX is not available at present with Fiat India. Earlier Fiat used to sell it for Rs 1.77 lakh (MRP, Mumbai). The other option would be to rebuild the engine at an authorised Fiat Tata workshop and use the car.
