Mahindra and Mahindra, so far renowned for its SUVs, has forayed into the truck segment. Group Vice Chairman Anand Mahindra tells Hindustan Times that the timing could not have been better.
On trucks and competition
I would say the market is not that competitive... there is a duopoly. The real question is, are we in a position to be more credible and that is the challenge. The reason I think so is because of my infrastructure, we are not coming from one side or vertical but we have a whole back office, whether it is in the area of procurement, R&D or logistics channel, we bring an ecosystem as our secret weapon. I think we have a great opportunity.
On the timing of the foray
I have not employed an astrologer for entering now but it looks like we did because we could not have chosen a better time than this. The market is recovering, infrastructure spend is going to be the largest now and you cannot choose a better time than this to enter the truck business.
On his company’s low presence in the growing car
Whenever we get into businesses that are into utility space we go only with our brand. The other space that we go is through joint ventures. Joint ventures have brought great values to us as they help us upgrade our manufacturing units, upgrade technology, provide us more volume.
These values should not be underestimated. We would like to sell more Logan. Unfortunately since we don’t own the source code we cannot modify the car.
