Following the judicial setback to its much-hyped 125-cc bike Flame, TVS Motor Co has decided to go back to the drawing board to modify the bike with a single spark plug to get over the legal hassle.
The Madras High Court had on February 16 restrained TVS from selling Flame after Bajaj Auto challenged the use of the twin-spark plug technology, over which the latter had a valid patent. The TVS claim of non-violation of patent on the grounds that the twin-spark plug technology had been deployed in a three-port engine could be verified only during the trial the court had further ruled.
Since the final finding could take years, TVS, not wanting to be left out of the lucrative 125 -cc segment, has decided to redesign Flame with a single-spark plug and launch it later this year, company sources said. “It is true that a single-spark plug engine may not provide the same performance as the original Flame but we expect to overcome that disadvantage with suitable modifications,” a TVS official said.
