Still recovering from the European and American emissions scandal, German automaker Volkswagen (VW) is counting on its new entrant in the sedan segment in India to improve its brand image. Facing stiff competition from cars like the Dzire and Amaze, VW’s Ameo will not only attempt to win back some consumer love but also try and make the most of sales in a market that has been relatively shielded from the emissions controversy where the company’s was found to be in violations of standard norms.
Here are five things to know about the new Volkswagen Ameo:
1. Ameo comes from the Latin word ‘Amo’ which means ‘I love’. The German auto major has developed this one especially for India and will produce it at the VW Chakan plant near Pune.
2.The car is designed on the PQ24 platform of the Polo and the Vento. Along with the platform, Ameo will also borrow the design cues of the Polo as well as its engines.
3. Ameo will be powered by a 1.2 litre MPI petrol engine that will churn out 74bhp, 110Nm while a 1.5 litre diesel mill will generate 88.7bhp of power and 230Nm of twist.
4. Features like a front centre armrest, rear AC vents, a 2-din touchscreen infotainment system, auto-dimming inside rear-view mirror, first-in-class rain sensing wiper system and turn indicators on optical rear view mirrors are expected, in a move to entice customers away from its competition.
5. The compact sedan will compete against the segment leader Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire as well as the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Ford Figo Aspire. So expect the car to be priced in the Rs 5-8 lakh bracket when it becomes available in showrooms later this year.
Volkswagen will be marking its presence at Delhi Auto Expo this Friday where it will launch its premium SUV Tiguan. Other cars to feature in the Volkswagen pavilion include the Passat GTE and the 2016 Beetle.
The German automaker which in September last year was found violating major emission norms in US and several countries across Europe and Asia, maintained a low profile since in Tokyo, Dubai and Frankfurt auto shows.
Recently, at the North American International Auto Show, the German automaker had revealed the Tiguan GTE Active Concept, which is a hybrid one.
Experts in the world auto industry said Volkswagen is blazing all guns to come out clean and win back the trust of the consumers across US and other affected countries.
