Volkswagen is all set to unveil its compact sedan VW Ameo, along with premium SUV Tiguan and a facelift of the premium sedan Passat at the Delhi Auto Expo. The 21st Century Beetle will be Volkswagen’s showstopper at the expo which opens for the press on Feb 3 and for public viewing on Feb 5.

Deriving its name from the Latin word ‘Amo’ which means ‘I love’, the German auto major has developed Ameo specifically for India and will borrow not just the platform and the design cues of Polo but also the engines. The Ameo will be manufactured at the VW’s Chakan facility in Maharashtra and is will be placed somewhere below the Rapid, a mid-level sedan, to compete with Maruti Swift Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest and Ford Figo Aspire.

So we also expect the price to be anywhere between Rs 5 to 8 lakh.

“By marking its entry into the dynamic compact sedan space, the Volkswagen Ameo is expected to be a game changer for the brand in India,” the company said in a statement.

Volkswagen will launch the ‘made-in-India’ and ‘made-for-India’ Ameo at the Volkswagen Pavilion during the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo to be held from February 5-9.

Besides, the Passat GTE will get a 1.4-litre TSI engine of 156 PS, which when combined with an electric motor, will churn out a system 218 PS of power, enabling a driving range of over 1,000 km. In all-electric driving, it can cover over 50 km.

The German auto major, which had a disastrous 2015 at the bourse after it was caught cheating in the emissions scandal, will also launch its successful European SUV Tiguan in India during the Auto Expo.

VW is also bringing back the “iconic” 21st Century avatar of the Beetle in India, powered by a turbocharged 1.4-litre TSI engine, and mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox.
