German automobile major Volkswagen launched the new version of its sports utility vehicle (SUV) Touareg and small car Beetle at the 11th Auto Expo being held in New Delhi on Thursday, while simultaneously unveiling its hybrid concept car XL 1.

"The Touareg, which will be available from April, will have a more efficient engine, lighter body and is more aerodynamic," said Ulrich Hackenberg, board member, Volkswagen. "It's the first in its class to have an eight-speed automatic gearbox."

Though similar in size to the popular Volkswagen hatchback Polo, the new hybrid car XL 1 has a 0.8 litre engine giving 48 ps of power.

"The plug-in hybrid concept is the world's most efficient concept car today," Hackenberg said.

The new Beetle has the stylish reference to the original car but looks more mature and masculine in design, especially with a rear spoiler, chrome-plated tail pipes and aluminum trim strips.

"The new Beetle has many more features which make it look like a top level sports car," added Hackenberg.
