Fazilka police seized 2-lakh litres of country-made liquor from Chak Balochan (Mahalam) village under Sadar Jalalabad police station of the sub-division in a raid on Wednesday morning.
Following a tip-off, a police force, led by Fazilka SSP Swapan Sharma, raided the village at around 6am. In a three-hour long search operation, the police recovered a huge cache of country-made liqour from various spots including houses of the village.
Meanwhile, in some houses about 100 sq feet dug-outs, which were being used to prepare liqour, were also found. The seized liqour was calculated to be more than 2 lakh litres, which was later destroyed by the police.
Chak Balochan has been in news in connection with the seizure of drugs and illegal liquor in the past as well.
A number of cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act are also registered against the people of the village.
In one such earlier case on May 30, Sadar Jalalabad SHO was severely injured following a clash with the local villagers when a police team had raided and held some people, reportedly with the contraband.
When contacted, the Fazilka senior superintendent of police (SSP) Swapan Sharma said 12 cases against 26 accused have been registered and six of them have already been nabbed.
“Mahalam is the main source of supply of country-made liquor in the region. We were trying hard to bring these people into mainstream life by giving them skill training,” said Sharma.
