District transport officer Damanjeet Singh on Tuesday issued a show-cause notice to Agro Imtex India Private Limited, the contractors responsible for making and affixing the high-security number plates on vehicles. The notice demands an explanation on how were three such plates found abandoned outside the DTO complex on Sunday.

The notice mentions that three HSRPs -  PB03Y-3937, PB-04 L-4160 and PB03L-4160 - were found abandoned and could have been misused. The company has been given a week to reply.

However, Agro Imtex India has claimed that the three number plates in question were among the 300 stolen more than 18 months ago.

Company in-charge Sandeep Kumar claimed that an inquiry into the records had shown that an FIR had been lodged at Civil Lines Police Station in this case.

Previously, the DTO had claimed that this appeared to be a case of manufacture of fake plates.

Sandeep also claimed that that a number from Faridkot was in the lot of abandoned plates as it was also among those stolen and at that time, the plates from adjoining districts too were also made in Bathinda.

Civil lines SHO Sikander Singh said that he would have to look in to the records to check the progress registered in the theft case.

So, even though the plates might have been stolen, but it remains a mystery that why were they found dumped outside the DTO complex.
