Police have registered a case against five people, who have reportedly duped a Chandigarh resident of Rs 22 lakh by not registering title deed in his name, even after selling the plot.

Babita Rani and Jasmel Singh, both residents of Barnala and Charanjit Singh of Delhi, had sold 27 biswas on Handiaya Road to one Jagan Nath, a Chandigarh resident. The agreement to sell was witnessed by Mohan Lal and Jang Singh, both
ex-councillors of Barnala.

Instead of registering the title deed in favour of Nath, the sellers sold the land again and registered it in favour of a new buyer.

"Patiala DSP (detective) Manjit Singh Brar conducted preliminary investigations and on his recommendation, a case has been registered under Sections 406 (breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) at Barnala against sellers and witnesses," said SHO Rajwinder Singh.

He added that the accused were absconding.
