The Mansa police have suspended a head constable for allegedly torturing a youth who, unable to bear the humiliation, had later committed suicide.

The family of 22-year-old MBA student from Mansa district, who committed suicide on April 26 by jumping before a train, had alleged police torture as the reason behind him taking the extreme step.

On the day of the suicide by Amit Kumar, the railway police officials had claimed financial crisis as the reason behind the suicide. The body was reportedly cut into pieces after being dragged by the train for about half a kilometre. The Government Railway Police had registered a case under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code and started investigations.

The family of Amit Kumar, who was pursuing his MBA second year at a private college in Bathinda had alleged that on April 24 evening, head constable Satpal Singh had tortured him.

His father Ashwini Kumar, who runs a shop, claimed, "On April 24, Amit was riding a motorcycle to drop his elder brother Abhishek who works in a private company. The head constable at a police barrier stopped them and asked for documents. The policeman misbehaved with Amit and used abusive language, following which Amit entered into an argument with him. The angry policeman took my son to the police station and tortured him badly. Next day, we went to the SSP's office with a written complaint but failed to meet him. Depressed by the humiliation, Amit committed suicide."

SSP Narinder Bhargav said, "Head constable Satpal Singh has been suspended and an inquiry has been marked, to be conducted by DSP Sulakhan Singh. Strict action will be taken against the guilty. The family wanted us to wait for their further statement till the bhog ceremony."
