The district police claim to have arrested five members of an inter-state gang on Wednesday, who were allegedly involved in robbing and attacking innocent people across the state with pistols and sharp-edged weapons.
SSP Surjit Singh Grewal said the police had received a tip-off that some miscreants had entered the district for looting vegetable traders and other passers-by. "Four special police teams were constituted under the supervision of SP Dilbagh Singh Pannu and the team put barricades at different places in the district.
We were successful as the police tried to stop four people who were riding a motorcycle but they tried to flee from the spot. After a long chase the police nabbed them from outside the town near Kotkapura bypass," he added.
The SSP said the arrested people were identified as Dharminder Singh of Dosanjh village in Moga, Davinder Singh, Jagdeep Singh, both of Rauli village, Lovepreet Singh of Lakha village in Jagraon and Baltej Singh of Gajanwala village in Baghapurana.
"Another gang member, Narpinder Singh of Preet Nagar, Moga, was recently arrested and a pistol was recovered from him with the help of the locals while he had opened fire at a couple for looting them at Akalsar Road, Moga," said the SSP.
"During the investigation, we found that the gang members were responsible for attacking sarpanch Malkit Singh of Sandhuanwala village and ex-serviceman Darbara Singh. The attackers had snatched mobile phones from the two. After that they targeted Jaswant Singh of Khosa Randhir village and snatched a bag and a mobile phone from him," the SSP said.
He said the police had recovered a pistol, an air pistol, swords, baseballs and other sharp-edged weapons from the accused. "A case has been registered against five people in this regard. Further investigation is on," he said.
