Mediating in streetfight costs woman her life

A 70-year-old woman paid with her life for mediating in a quarrel between two groups at Bilaspur village under the Nihal Singh Wala police station in this district on Monday. The police have booked four people on murder charges.

In his complaint to the police, victim's grandson Gurmeet Singh stated that his grandmother Harnam Kaur went to pacify two groups who were fighting on the street, when Amandeep Singh, a taxi driver, attacked her with a wooden stick. She was being rushed to the civil hospital at Nihal Singh Wala, but breathed her last on the way.

Swaran Singh, station house officer (SHO) at Nihal Singh Wala police station, said, "After we got the news, two police parties were sent to Bilaspur to nab the accused, who had fled by that time. We brought body of Harnam Kaur to civil hospital, Moga for autopsy. The body was handed over the family members after the post-mortem."

The SHO said Amandeep Singh of Bilaspur (Moga) and three unidentified people have been booked under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code. "Investigations are on and we will nab the accused soon," he said.
