Newborn girl found in Moga village sewer

In just her second day of life, a girl was dumped with some clothes on in a sewer of Fatehgarh Korotana village in this district.

Sarabjit Singh of Fatehgarh Korotana, a man on his way to work on Friday, heard the baby's cries from the main sewer line and picked her up, after which he informed the panchayat first. The villagers called the 108 ambulance service and the police.

The paramedics in the ambulance severed the child's umbilical cord and nurses fed her milk. Then the police lodged a criminal case against the unidentified mother.

"When we got the news, we sealed the village's borders," said sarpanch Lal Singh. "We hoped to catch the people who had abandoned the child. "It is possible that some outsiders abandoned her at the village on Thursday night."

At least four newborn girls have been abandoned in the region in the past six months, among cases that have come to light. Anil Kumar, assistant sub-inspector at Dharamkot, said the baby saved on Friday had been taken to Dr Mathura Dass Civil Hospital in Moga for medical attention and the doctor on duty had declared her fit.

The doctors at the hospital have said that the girl was awake when brought in and now she was well.
