The staff of a private bus operator thrashed students of Government Rajindra College over the issue of buying tickets on Friday.
Gurpreet Singh (22), a resident of Bhucho, boarded the private bus on Friday. However, during the way, he was assaulted by the bus checkers, after he refused to buy a ticket, claiming to be in the possession of a pass.
Sources claimed that Gurpreet, a member of the Punjab Student Union, was assaulted with wooden rods by nine attackers.
The police have registered a case against unidentified accused and a person has also been arrested. The victim was rushed to Bathinda Civil Hospital and his condition is stated to be critical.
The district Punjab Students Union has demanded immediate action and arrest of the accused.
ASI Sukhpal Singh, the investigation officer in the case, said: "We have registered a case against the accused Veera Singh and his other unidentified accomplices under Sections 394, 341, 506, 323, 148, 149, of the Indian Penal Code and 25, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act."
Punjab Student Union leader Sumit Singh said, "It was a planned attack. Gurpreet Singh was a good leader of the students and raised his voice against the bus operators' atrocity. Students accompanying the victim have reported that the bus conductor called some of his friends to teach Gurpreet a lesson. The issue, as always, pertains to buying tickets in the private bus. Students go to college to study and not to be get beaten up at the hands of private goons, who have full political support."
On September 5, a similar incident was reported from Mansa, when private bus checkers kidnapped a college student and assaulted him, over the issue of tickets.
