Even as the state government extended the last date to deposit property tax with 10% rebate to December 31, on Tuesday, a large section of people liable to pay the tax are yet to come forward for depositing the same.

With Tuesday being the last day according to the earlier notification, people in large numbers turned out for filing their Property Tax Returns (PTR) in the office of municipal corporation Bathinda (MCB). Applicants were seen standing in long queues for depositing the property tax, waiting for their turn to deposit the tax.

Records with the urban body authorities show that of the total 90, 000 units liable to pay property tax under the jurisdiction of the corporation, only 21, 300 have filed their property tax and generated a revenue of Rs 4.41 crore. More than 1,600 returns were filed on Tuesday, generating a revenue of Rs 35 lakh.

Perhaps, the relatively poor response forced the state government to extend the last date for depositing the tax with a 10% rebate to December 31, this year.

After December, the tax will be levied at par till January 31 next year, while 25% penalty will be imposed on depositing the property tax after that.

Expressing his satisfaction at the process, Bathinda MC chief Vipul Ujwal said that they had received a good response from the people and achieve revenue targets.
