Rs 25 lakh, 2,058 bottles of wine seized in Moga

During a special drive against drug smugglers, the police have seized a huge quantity of poppy husk, opium and other harmful drugs from various areas of Moga and Ferozepur districts. A senior Akali leader and former sarpanch was also booked in a drug case.

Talking to mediapersons here on Friday, Amar Singh Chahal, deputy inspector general of police (DIG), Ferozepur range, said that the police have seized more than 25 lakh form the possession of different people who were carrying the money without any relevant document.

“We have also recovered heroin worth 6 crore, 4.8-kg opium, 10.75 quintal poppy husk, 2,058 bottles of wine, 1,580 harmful capsules, one .315 bore gun, one .12 bore gun and a pistol from different people,” the DIG said.

On the other hand, Moga senior superintendent of police (SSP) S Bhupati said that the district police allegedly arrested three notorious smugglers in separate cases during a special drive in the district during the past 24 hours.

“We had received a tip-off that some smugglers were trying to sell opium and poppy husk. A special police team, led by Jatinderjit Singh, station house officer of city-south police station, raided the Chowk Sekhan area in Moga and caught a man with 1-kg opium.

The arrested man has been identified as Shavinder Kaumar, a resident of Moga,” the SSP added.

The SSP further said that in another case, Sarabjit Singh, of Sultanwind village in Amritsar district, was arrested near Charik Chowk here with 60-kg poppy husk.
