State rural games for girls opening on Sunday

The city is ready to host the Punjab State Rural Games for Girls (under-16 age group) from Sunday to Tuesday (November 18 to 20) at Multipurpose Sports Stadium here.

The Punjab sports department and Sports Authority of India will hold this event together under the Panchayat Yuva Karida Aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA). Sports director Shiv Dular Singh Dhillon stated in a press release issued here on Saturday that 2,200 participants from across the state would participate in the games and 200 officials conduct the matches in 11 disciplines.

The players selected from this tournament will go into intensive training for the upcoming national rural sports tournaments. "Most of the state's sporting talent is in villages,: said Dhillon. "The Indian government wants to tap this talent."

The main aim of PYKKA is to develop playgrounds in the country's villages to encourage athletes by providing them with good infrastructure, equipment, and opportunities to participate in the block-, district-, and state-level competitions, to discover good players for the state, national and international competitions.

Athletics, basketball, boxing, hockey, handball, judo, kho-kho, kabaddi, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling will be the various events at the state rural games. Jasvirpal Kaur Brar will be the nodal officer supervising all arrangements.

All the 22 teams representing different districts have received comfortable stay. Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Faridkot are lodged in Guru Nanak Thermal Plant Special School; Mohali, Ferozepur, Barnala in MHR Public School; Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Nawanshahr in Adarsh School, Nehari Colony; Patiala and Fazilka in St Xavier's Convent; Jalandhar, Muktsar, Fatehgarh Sahib in Police Public School; Moga and Ropar in Delhi Public School; Amritsar in National Public School; Ludhiana and Mansa in Mount Latera Convent; Pathankot and Sangrur in Millennium School; and Bathinda in Multipurpose Sports Stadium.

Irrigation minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon will be chief guest at the opening ceremony inside Multipurpose Sports Stadium at 11am on Sunday. The closing ceremony will be on at 3pm Tuesday at the same place. Education minister Sikandar Singh Maluka would be chief guest at that function.
