A dispute over irrigation water turned violent and resulted in the death of two persons of a family on the spot at Thikriwal village during wee hours of Saturday.

Harpreet Singh, 23, stabbed his uncle Jagsir Singh, 42, with a grubbing hoe, a weeding tool, and Jagsir, in turn, fired with his gun at Harpreet before collapsing, killing him on the spot. Harpreet Singh had got married two years ago. He is survived by wife and a one-year-old child. Jagsir, who had no child, is survived by his wife.

Superintendent of police (detective) Sharanjit Singh said, "Harpreet went to irrigate his fields at about 2.00 am on Friday-Saturday night. However, Jagsir, who was also there, claimed that it was his turn to irrigate fields. Both argued with each other on the issue and had an exchange of hot words. Jagsir immediately went home and returned with a gun. When Harpreet attacked Jagsir with the hoe, Jagsir also fired at him.

"We have registered a cross-case of murder against both Jagsir and Harpreet under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), members of both families said that they don't want to pursue the case it being a family dispute. We have investigated and have reached the conclusion that no other person was involved in the incident," Sharanjit added.

Sharanjit said, "Bodies of both the victims have been handed over to their families after post mortem."

Village sarpanch Gurdial Singh said, "Jagsir Singh has no child whereas Harpreet has one-year boy. The entire village was stunned over the tragic incident."
