2 die in police chase, mob on rampage

Violence erupted in Niwari town, about 80km from Tikamgarh district headquarters, after two youths drowned in a lake during a police chase on Sunday evening. The police are reported to have lobbed teargas shells to control the mob, but to no avail. Traffic on the national highway (Jhansi -Khajuraho) also came to a halt.

Violence erupted in Niwari town, about 80km from Tikamgarh district headquarters, after two youths drowned in a lake during a police chase on Sunday evening. The police are reported to have lobbed teargas shells to control the mob, but to no avail. Traffic on the national highway (Jhansi -Khajuraho) also came to a halt.

The police claimed that the youths were involved in gambling and when a police team raided the den, they fled from the spot.

Immediately after the death of the duo - Kailash Ahirwar, 22, and Ramnaresh Rajput, 35 - the irate residents gheraoed the local police station, pelted stones, torched two buses and damaged other properties. Realising the gravity of the situation a heavy police force from Chhatarpur and Sagar was rushed to the town. Collector and superintendent of police Tikamgarh and DIG police Chhatarupur left for Niwari.

IG police Sagar range Pankaj Srivastava said the situation was tense, hence additional force had been sent to control the situation.
