A resident of Rajgarh, about 140 km northwest of Bhopal, has recently lodged complaint with the district collector that her husband was trying to marry off their minor girl for the second time in lieu of money.

At the weekly public hearing conducted by the collector, Sorabh Bai of Motipura village said her daughter was married at the age of 5 years. Now her husband Madanlal was trying to get the girl married again and has sought money from the prospective groom’s family.

The collector asked the police to register a case under Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, against the father and arrest him as soon as possible.

Rajgarh collector MB Ojha told HT: “The girl did not come to us so we cannot tell her exact age, but the mother claimed she was 12 or 13 years. We have directed that a case be registered against the father who was trying for a second marriage of his minor daughter.”
