Three women architects from Bhopal will present a paper on ‘sustainable design education through vernacular architecture’ in special context to Chanderi, a historical town in Ashoknagar district, during the 32nd international conference of Passive and Low Energy Architecture.
The conference will be held in Los Angeles, USA from July 11-13. Organised by the University of Southern California and two branches of California Polytechnic State University at Pomona and San Luis Obispo respectively, the conference will feature presentations from architects across the world.
Senior architect Shikha Patidar, architects Poonam Khan and Brishbhanlali Raghuwanshi will present their analyses based on research and case studies by 70 students of School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal. “The students were divided in three groups to study the lifestyle at three areas of Chanderi.
“They interacted with residents and prepared a case study defining developmental architecture designs as per local requirements of Chanderi, while keeping its historical elements intact,” said Shikha Patidar.
“The paper depicts how we can achieve materialistic development while sustaining Chanderi’s heritage. The research has several architectural design methods applicable with available resources,” she added.
On being asked about the inspiration behind the research, Raghuwanshi said, “Everybody talks of development but has forgotten vernaculars. The students are future architects and can bring about change. Therefore, we involved them in the study.”
The trio will table their presentations among representatives from over 40 countries.
