The assault and parading naked of a woman and her paramour in Ratlam district’s Meghlakhali village on Monday has brought to the fore the grim fact that Madhya Pradesh is no stranger to such incidents.

A 2016 report by the state home department has revealed that 31 women were paraded naked in MP between 2013 and 2015.

Women activist Rolly Shivhare said the figures were alarming. “Imagine — this is just the number of reported cases. How many women must not be reporting the same? I think the state government is not taking crime against women seriously. Had they been doing so, MP wouldn’t have registered 24 cases of molestation and 14 cases of torture of women per day in 2015”, she said.

Prof Asha Shukla, head of the women’s studies centre at Bhopal’s Barkatullah University, said, “We have to work on more fronts like gender sensitisation, awareness programmes, quality education, and intervention programmes,” she said.

“I have already spoken to the police officers concerned looking into the Ratlam incident. The state women’s commission is taking its cognisance and a report regarding this case will be sought from the authorities,” MP Women’s Commission chairperson Lata Wankhede said.

The home department figures state that last year, 9,056 cases of molestation, 5,126 cases of women being kidnapped, 3,935 cases of women being raped, 5,059 cases of torture, 10,111 cases of criminal intimidation, 661 dowry-related deaths and 36 cases of trafficking were reported from the state.
