Just few hours before the deadline for locking choices of institutes and branches in the first round of engineering counselling, 33,761 candidates had locked choices in the general pool.
Also, 14,630 candidates locked choices for the tuition fee waiver scheme seats till 6.20pm on Thursday. The deadline for choice locking is 11.45pm on Thursday. Overall, 43,338 candidates have registered for the first round of engineering counselling.
Since the total number of seats for engineering courses is likely to be around 1.15 lakh for this academic session 2013-14, the comparatively lesser number of registrations in the first round looks worrying.
Director of technical education (DTE), Arun Nahar however said the counselling this year is different in the way that the results of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) has not yet been announced as the scenario is not clear on admissions to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs).
“Students are waiting to seek admission to these national level institutes and thus we are expecting far greater turnout in the second round of counselling that would commence on July 3,” Nahar said. He added that the directorate is expecting the overall admissions to cross the figure of last session (2012-13). During last session, about 71,000 admissions had been conducted to engineering colleges in state.
