Four teenagers were arrested from Singrauli district on Sunday for murdering a pregnant school peon on August 21 who had tried to stop them from stealing ceiling fans from the school premise.
“Three of the accused were Class 10 dropouts from Jharkhand while another was a Class 11 student at the school. Planning to steal fans and sell them for liquor, the group had entered the school campus on August 21, a holiday, and were trying to escape when victim Rangbai Panika raised alarm,”Singrauli additional superintendent of police Suryakant Sharma said.
The accused stabbed Panika repeatedly but the victim tried to escape, after which one of the four teenagers smashed her head with a stone, killing her on the spot. They then escaped from the school through the toilet.
Sharma said the Class 11 student was friends with the three others in Jharkhand and got admitted himself to the
school recently. “After questioning the school staff, we checked registers for students remaining absent from classes for a long time without any valid reason. We zeroed in on 10-12 such boys and nabbed the Class 11 student who spilled the beans on his accomplices from Jharkhand. The four confessed to committing the crime during investigation,” said Sharma.
