As many as seven persons were killed and 15 others injured when a pickup van overturned in Datia district on Sunday. Besides, five persons drowned when a boat capsized in Harda.
In the first incident, seven persons were killed when a van carrying workers from Uttar Pradesh (UP), overturned. Additional SP Jaiveer Singh Bhadoria said that the victims had come from Lalitpur (UP) to work on fields here.
The vehicle was driven at a fast speed and the driver lost control, resulting in the van getting overturned. Seven persons died while nearly 15 were injured in the mishap.
The dead were identified as Shanti Devi, 43, Roshan Ahirwar, 16, Ramesh Kumar, 40, Savitri Devi, 26, Gannu, 70, Hira, 60.
All of them died on the spot. The injured were rushed to the hospital.
The incident occurred just a day after six pilgrims from UP were killed in a similar mishap in adjoining Bhind district on Saturday.
Boat capsizes in Harda, five die
In the second major mishap on Sunday, five persons were killed when a boat capsized in Harda. The victims were going to their village when the boat capsized in the water body.
The police officials and divers reached the spot, which falls under the jurisdiction of Handia police station. The incident occurred in Indirasagar dam’s backwater which is linked to Narmada river. Eight persons were rescued by the divers while five had died.
Those who died includes kids and teenagers. Three bodies were recovered till the filing of this report.
Further, half-a-dozen persons lost their lives in separate mishaps in Agar, Ujjain, Jabalpur, Bhopal and Shahdol districts today, taking the toll to 18 in the day.
