A woman, who was sent to jail by a district court for the alleged murder of her husband, consumed some poisonous substance in front of the police in Bhopal Central Jail. She died late on Monday night while undergoing treatment, police said.

Sarswati Ahirwar, 28, a resident of Siddharth Enclave under Piplani police station, was brought to the central jail on Monday after the district court remanded her to judicial custody. As the woman was undergoing physical examination, she allegedly consumed some poisonous substance and lost her consciousness.

According to the jail authorities, Saraswati was first examined by the jail doctors and later was rushed to Hamidia hospital where she died during the treatment late on Monday night. The short post-mortem report also suggested death due to consumption of some poisonous substance.

Trying to pass the buck, superintendent of the central jail, MR Patel, said there was “no fault on the jail authorities' part.”

“The police should have physically examined the woman thoroughly after she was arrested, but it didn't seem to have happened because the woman was hiding a small packet filled with some poisonous substance in her blouse that went undetected,” Patel told HT.

The jail superintendent said a case has been registered at Gandhi Nagar police station in the matter.

The police department, on the other hand, also tried to shift the blame on the jail authorities and said that they had examined the woman after arrest and also before producing her before the court, but no poisonous substance was found in her possession.

“Women constables had examined the woman (Saraswati) thoroughly. It is matter of investigation how the woman got the poison which she consumed. A judicial probe has been instituted and further action would be taken as per the judicial probe report,” said superintendent of police (city) Shiv Dayal.
