Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati arrived here on Saturday afternoon amidst hectic preparations for the convention of party workers on Sunday.
According to party sources, more than one lakh party workers from Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand are expected to attend the mega meet at the Jamboree Ground.
All four states have one thing in common, a large tribal base, and the occasion is being perceived as part of the BSP's attempt to expand the party base beyond Uttar Pradesh.
One major reason for the inability of the BSP to expand its base in MP has been its failure to catch the fancy of the vast tribal population of the state. “It’s a fact that without the support of the tribals the BSP cannot make inroads into the state,” said a top party leader on the condition of anonymity.
