A sub adult tigress was found dead in the Kanha National Park on Monday by park staff. Forest department officials said that another tiger had killed the tigress. This is the second such incident within a month and a half and 6th in year in Kanha.
Kanha Field Director HS Negi told HT that the partially eaten body of the tigress, aged about 14 months, was found in the meadow area of Kanha on Monday morning. He said the park staff saw the tiger eating the body of the tigress too. A post mortem of the tigress was carried out which suggested death due to fighting with another tiger. The tigress's body was disposed off by the park authorities as per norms laid down by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). Dr Shiva Chavan, who works for a wildlife NGO, was the NTCA nominee while Chandresh Khare was the state government nominee when the body was disposed off.
Negi said that tigers killing other tigers is a problem common to all areas with high tiger density.
This is the 6th incident in 2009 when a tiger has been killed by another. In another incident, a sub adult male was killed by another tiger at Pench National Park also.
